Gifts for the person who buys everything themselves

There are three gifts that work for someone who buys everything they want. The thing they showed you last week, bought by you today, before they get to it. Something they cannot add to a cart, like a booked day or a thing that takes time to make. Or the boring upgrade they would never spend on themselves. Everything else, the gadget you researched for a week, the “better version” of what they have, ends up as a duplicate or in a drawer.
Why a gift for someone who buys everything they want fails
The person I keep reading about in gift threads is a brother. He sends product links at midnight, “look at this”, and by Friday he owns it. His sister spends three weeks picking something thoughtful, and it is either the thing he already bought or a thing he would never have chosen. Twenty-four people in the comments tell her to give an experience instead. That is half of the answer.
The other half is noticing what those midnight links are. They are a wish list. He just does not call it that, and the gap between wanting and buying is about four days. The problem is not that he wants nothing. It is that you would have to be faster than him.

Be faster than him
Take the last link he sent and buy that exact thing today. Not the newer model, not the one with better reviews, the one he picked. Then tell him. “Do not buy the headphones, I got them.” You lose the surprise of what is inside the box. You keep the surprise that someone actually got him what he wanted, which for this kind of person is rarer.
If he sends several links, take the cheapest one, not the flashiest. The $300 thing he will buy himself on the first payday. The $40 thing sits in an open tab for a month because it is not exciting enough to buy and not cheap enough to forget. That is the one that is still unbought by his birthday.
I do not know if this works with every impulse buyer. Some people will buy the thing anyway, out of habit, the moment they have a free evening. For those, the next section.
Give something he cannot impulse-buy
An impulse buyer can order any object in the world before dinner. The things he cannot get in one tap are the ones that make a gift.
A day, not a thing. Tickets to something on a date, a table booked, a hike or a climbing session you planned and he just turns up to. He cannot impulse-buy a Saturday with you. If he is the kind of person who researches gear, plan something around the gear he already has.
Things that need his body. A fitting, a tailored shirt, a proper bike fit, a session with a coach. He would have to book it, show up, and be measured. That is exactly the kind of purchase impulse buyers never make, because it is a process and not a click.
Things that take time. A photo book from the trip you both took. His grandfather’s watch, serviced. An old thing of his, repaired properly. None of this is on any shop page, and all of it took you longer than a gadget would have.
The boring upgrade. People who buy every new gadget rarely upgrade the dull stuff. The good kitchen knife instead of the set from the supermarket. Proper wool socks. A sharpener, a coffee grinder, a pillow that costs more than a pillow should. He will use it every day and would not have bought it in a hundred years.
Turn the midnight links into a list
The links are the real information. The fix is to stop receiving them as texts and start receiving them as a list, so you can act on them before he does.
Ask him to paste the links into one place instead of into the chat. Most people will, once, if you frame it as “so I stop guessing”. In a wishstack, the card fills itself from the link, and anyone he shares the list with can quietly mark an item as taken. He does not see who claimed what, so the surprise of which thing arrives survives. You get a push when he adds something new, which for an impulse buyer is the important part, because new means “not yet bought”.
There is one rule he has to follow for this to work, and it is the same one that keeps any family list alive past February . If he buys something off his own list, he removes it the same day. Otherwise you find out at the wrapping stage. I have not solved the brother who cannot wait. I have made it so his sister finds out before she buys, instead of after.
What not to do
Do not buy the better version. He chose the one he sent for a reason, usually a reason he researched for two hours. The newer model, the one with the extra feature, the one the reviews prefer, tells him you did not trust his choice.
Do not give a gift card to his favorite shop. He has already spent there this week. A gift card to a shop he would never enter, a good bookshop, a tailor, a restaurant, is a different story. It pushes him somewhere his impulse does not go.
Do not pick the flashiest thing on the list. Covered above, but it bears repeating, because it is the mistake everyone makes. The expensive thing is the one he will buy himself.
Do not give up and buy “something nice”. A candle for a man who buys drones is not a gift, it is a receipt for having tried. If you really have nothing, take him to lunch and ask him to show you the open tabs on his phone. That is a list, and now you have it.
The person who buys everything is not hard to shop for. He is the easiest person in your family, because he has already told you exactly what he wants. You just have to read it as a list instead of a text, and get there first.
